Golden Ages Seniors Program (GCAO)
The GCAO Golden Ages Seniors Program is a community-based initiative dedicated to enhancing the well-being, dignity, and quality of life of Ghanaian-Canadian seniors aged 65 and above. The program provides culturally responsive, accessible, and inclusive services that promote active aging, reduce social isolation, and strengthen social connections within the community.
With support from the Ontario Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility through the Seniors Community Grant Program, the Golden Ages Program has engaged over 400 seniors through a wide range of health, wellness, education, and social participation activities designed to meet the evolving needs of older adults in Ontario.

What We Offer
- Health, Fitness & Wellness
The program prioritizes physical health and mobility through consistent, accessible fitness activities designed specifically for older adults.
- Virtual fitness sessions held every Monday and Wednesday
- Weekly Zumba and movement classes in partnership with community organizations
- Exercises focused on balance, strength, flexibility, and fall prevention
- Post-session social time to encourage connection and reduce isolation
These activities help seniors maintain independence, improve mobility, and stay physically active in a safe and supportive environment.
- Health Education & Awareness
We provide culturally sensitive health education sessions delivered by healthcare professionals and community experts.
Topics include:
- Nutrition and chronic disease management (diabetes, arthritis, hypertension)
- Mental health and emotional wellness
- Sickle Cell awareness and family health education
- Prostate cancer awareness and screening
- Healthy aging and preventive care
- Digital literacy and technology use for seniors
These sessions empower seniors with knowledge to make informed health decisions and improve overall quality of life.
- Social Engagement & Community Connection
Social connection is at the heart of the Golden Ages Program. We create opportunities for seniors to connect, share experiences, and build friendships.
Activities include:
- Weekly virtual chat sessions and check-ins
- Trivia, games, and brain-stimulating activities
- Cultural celebrations and holiday gatherings
- Community excursions and field trips
- End-of-year appreciation events and recognition ceremonies
These programs help foster belonging, joy, and a strong sense of community.
- Friendly Visitor & Support Services
To support vulnerable and isolated seniors, the program offers compassionate outreach services, including:
- Regular wellness check-in calls
- Friendly visitor support for companionship
- Assistance with accessing community services and programs
- Referrals to health, housing, and social support resources
These services ensure that no senior feels forgotten or alone.
- Education & Life Planning Support
We provide workshops that help seniors plan for the future and navigate important life decisions with confidence.
Topics include:
- Wills and estate planning
- Power of attorney
- Retirement and pension planning
- Funeral and end-of-life planning
- Understanding government and community benefits
- Housing and financial support resources
These sessions provide practical guidance and peace of mind for seniors and their families.
Community Impact
The Golden Ages Program continues to make a meaningful difference by:
