The Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario is inviting the community and Black Organizations in Canada to participate in the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Africans in the Diaspora (Project).

This project is designed to build capacity amongst Black Canadians and Africans in Diaspora communities in Canada through the implementation of a culturally focused and relevant Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course. Education of mental health among Black or African communities is a major challenge and as a result, many who suffer from mental health fail to get the appropriate support to improve. We continue to see an increased number of Black or African people suffering from depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorders etc. which has resulted in negatively impacting our communities.

This project will work with nominated Mental Health First Aid Instructors to build intervention capacity of individuals to provide immediate support for those experiencing mental health problems or in crises. The involvement of Black organizations across the province will enable us to reach the most Blacks and Individuals of African descent across Canada. The project is expected to start from March 2023.

As a participant in the project, your organization will be supporting the proliferation of MHFA to people of African descent to help bridge the barriers of mental health. Only 1 participant per organization will be enrolled in the MHFA training. We hope the person selected from your organization can help train more members in your community so that we can combat mental health in our communities using tools that are specific for the black community.

Participants will be compensated for their time in the engagement of the program.

The Nomination Intake Form linked below will assist us in selecting the MHFA instructors. If you or your group or organization is interested in participating in this pilot, please complete the intake form via the link below. This brief form should take approximately 2-5 minutes to complete.
